Carbohydrates are our bodies main source of energy, providing most of the fuel you need to function - it's the only fuel the brain uses to function.

There are different types of carbohydrate:
  • Simple
  • Complex
  • Cellulose - known as fibre

Simple Carbohydrates are commonly known as sugars. As well as the type you put in your coffee or tea, simple carbs are found in fruits, milk and many vegetables. Simple carbohydrates such as lactose, dextrose, sucrose and fructose are converted by the body into glucose - blood sugar. As the name suggests they are easy for the body to break down, resulting in the sugar hit, or short term energy boost you can get.

Complex Carbohydrates these are found in grain products, vegetables, dairy products and some fruits. These carbs provide energy for longer as they are take longer to break down.

Cellulose, or fibre, our bodies cannot digest fibre - it therefore passes through the body.
