The most important thing I can say is, thank God for Dr. Agatston and his diet! I had not been on a diet for 20 years. Back then I had belonged to a diet center and succeeded with substantial weight loss, but found the food list so restrictive that I couldn't maintain it for more than 6 weeks. As soon as I stopped the strict phase the weight piled back on, more than ever. I was fearful to try diets after that and my weight steadily climbed higher and higher.

My experience with South Beach Diet is nothing but amazing in comparison. After the first few days, which were trying; as my body was getting used to not having the hundreds of daily carbs it typically had, I started feeling better than I had in years. More energy, less aches and pains became the norm.

I do not cook elaborate meals, but have found lots of variety in phase 2 foods. After 10 weeks using the South Beach Diet I have lost 44 lbs. There are so many low carb, low/no saturated fat food products available now that accommodate and supplement the natural foods I eat as the base of Dr. Agatston's plan. Everything from bread mixes with a soy protein flour to chicken breast parmesan. His list of good fats and good carbs is very helpful. I do wish that more restaurants would offer a wide variety of appropriate dishes, but in the meantime I try to make careful choices when I eat out.

Instead of feeling as though I can't wait to get off this diet, the longer I'm on it the more I feel this is a permanent, positive lifestyle change. His books provide me with a reliable reference tool that I use often to educate and guide me. I am not one to write testimonials, however I feel so strongly about the difference South Beach Diet has made in my life I had to write in about my experience.

Get cooking
My husband and I have been on the diet for 12 days and are very happy. We are not really overweight...just put on some winter flab..so this seemed like a good way to do that.

And guess what, it worked!

i dropped from 132 to about 126 and he went from 175 to about 169.

We are going to go straight from Phase I to Phase III (eating for life) because we are at our goals already. We always cooked our dinners and tried to eat healthy, but after reading the book, we now know we weren't always making the best choices.

I can't believe that people have such a difficult time cooking their food. It is astonishing! Before this diet, we cooked things that were WAY more involved and time consuming than this. I think the problem with people is that they want all that is good for them but don't want to do anything about it.

Processed food is what gets us into this mess to begin with! I like that this diet isn't a "diet". It is the way that we were intended to eat from the beginning. Refined flour and corn syrup weren't part of the diet of our ancestors!

My husband and I both work full time and I have an hour commute each day. It is not the worst thing in the word to come home and cook together and spend some time with your family in the kitchen! If you are committed to being healthy, you need to prioritize your life accordingly.

Waking up 15 minutes earlier to scramble an egg isn't the end of the world!

I think that if most people ate this way and cared less about what was the easiest, most convenient thing for them, the world would be a LOT healthier.

P.S. these recipes are sooooooo easy and you can just take ideas from them and make up your own thing. it's fun!

Week One
I had to write a review even though I'm only in Phase 1.

This is excellent!

Trust me, I'm a girl who's been on Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and many more.

I even went to a top Medical facility in North Carolina for two months and gained the weight back. I'm really excited about the South Beach Diet! And I love the recipes they provide.

They are easy to do and taste great. I would even use them to entertain my skinny friends...they would never know that I had prepared something from a diet book!

I like it
My roommate and I are on day 10 of the South Beach Diet. I hate dieting but this isn't that bad.

I am not looking to loose a thousand lbs, but maybe about 10-15. I have not stepped on a scale but feel my pants fitting better everyday. I am a sugar-o-haulic and can't beleive that the cravings aren't haunting me anymore.

My roommate has definately lost so weight. She is down about 5 bls she says. She notices a change in her clothes as well.

We tried the Atkins about 3 months ago and couldn't do it. I think we ended up cheating after the 5 or 6th day because we felt weak and nasious.

I really like the South Beach and plan to stick to it for the duration.

It Helped Alot
I am over 50, a male, over weight, don't smoke, and was diagnosed diabetic about two years ago.

My A1C test was at 9.8 and I had problems with my feet, eyesight, and numbness in my fingers. It took a year for me to loose 50 pounds and to reduce my A1C to 5.3.

A side benefit is that most of my health problems have subsided. I have been three weeks completely off all diabetic drugs with a glucose level between 73 to 116 for the last month.

The best advise to me came from a friend - not a doctor. He told me to read the book "South Beach Diet."

After years of being overweight, I can now pretty much stay within my glucose levels without drug assistance. I would like to loose another 20 pounds, but I have hit a plato. Maybe with spring and more outside activities I can achieve my goal of 180, from my all-time high of 265. It was nice to find slacks off-the-rack up to six inches smaller. I make no claim tha it will work for you. I believe that it helped me. What have you got to loose? 20, 40, 60, 100, or more. Start someplace, why not here. Buy the book! There is no gimmicks to buy, pills or drinks to purchase, just educate yourself in what to eat and NOT to eat.

It was not all that hard to do, the alternative was a lot less acceptible.

Worth It
I don't know how much I have lost on this diet yet (I'm waiting until day 14 to weigh in), but I can see how much my stomach as gone down in the mirror. There is a lot of cooking involved, but if you are considering this diet, don't let that scare you! The list of food is there, and you can come up with your own recipe ideas.

Most all recipes in recipe books are "fancy;" you can sub and change whatever you like, as long as you don't add food from the "avoid" list.

My husband and I decided to use this diet to change our lifestyle of eating out.

We are parents, work long hours, and he goes to college. But we *make* time to cook (together) and have family meal time. We realized the fifteen and twenty pounds we had gained was because we had started picking up way too much take-out food (and supersizing!) and weren't cooking any more.

Even the kids love it-- I just give them a carb along with the meal because I know they need it. Something else about making those meals... you don't think about how yucky fast food is until you are eating well-flavored salmon steaks and sirloin, grilled veggies, etc. Shop the sales, improvise on the specialty foods like hummus, and make your own recipes from the list!

We are and I can tell I'm still losing weight!
